15 Pre-Hospital Emergency Care terms
My name is Jimmy, and I am currently enrolled in a Springboard to a DCS : option prerequisites program However, I wish to go into Pre-Hospital Emergency Care for next semester. This program trains students to be parademics. This job consists of helping people that are in emergencies, like car accidents or heart attacks, before bringing them to the hospital. Since I am going into a new program I thought it would be interesting for me to make a glossary of words that could be useful to know once I start in this new field of study.
- acidosis
- An excessively acid condition of the body fluids or tissues
- bradypnea
- Bradypnea is the medical term for abnormally slow breathing.
- combitube
- A blind insertion airway device used in the pre-hospital and emergency setting. It is designed to provide an airway to facilitate the mechanical ventilation of a patient in respiratory distres.
- diaphoresis
- Sweating, especially to an unusual degree as a symptom of disease or a side effect of a drug.
- embolism
- Obstruction of an artery, typically by a clot of blood or an air bubble.
- fontanel
- A space between the bones of the skull in an infant or fetus, where ossification is not complete and the sutures not fully formed. The main one is between the frontal and parietal bones.
- glucagon
- A hormone secreted by the pancreas that acts in opposition to insulin in the regulation of blood glucose levels.
- hypoxia
- Deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues.
- infarct
- A small localized area of dead tissue resulting from failure of blood supply.
- kendrick extraction device
- A device that is used in vehicle extrication to remove victims of traffic collisions from motor vehicles.
- life support kit
- Equipment in a hospital used for this
- miosis
- Excessive constriction of the pupil of the eye.
- nitroglycerin
- An explosive yellow liquid made by nitrating glycerol, used in explosives such as dynamite. It is also used in medicine as a vasodilator in the treatment of angina pectoris.
- orthopnea
- Difficult or painful breathing except in an erect sitting or standing position.
- pang
- A sudden sharp pain or painful emotion.
